February 2020
Monthly 2020
sighting map
Another month is in the books and here's how February's orca sightings looked for the Salish Sea. Overall, numbers were up for both Southern Residents and Bigg's (transient) killer whales compared to last year, but that was in part helped by the fact that there were fewer wind storms this year! Still, it's quite impressive that Bigg's killer whales were present in the Salish Sea 22 out of the month's 29 days, as historically this has been a single-digit month.
Thanks as always to Tomislav Flip for generating the maps for us and to everyone throughout the region who reports their whale sightings to regional networks for us to help compile!
