Sightings Maps
We collaborate with numerous groups and individuals to help confirm, ID, document, and track killer whale sightings throughout the entirety of the Salish Sea. Some of our primary partners include Orca Network, the Pacific Whale Watch Association, the PWWA App, and regional community sightings networks on social media. This type of tracking is only possible due to the contributions of hundreds of community scientists.
Monthly Killer whale Sightings in the Salish sea
OBI compiles and shares these sightings through monthly and annual sightings maps. We define a sighting as a report of a unique group of whales seen on a unique day, so each dot on the map represents the first known location for one group of whales on a given day. In other words, repeat sightings of the same group over the course of a day are not included.
