Our first high quality data with both loud discrete calls and drone footage!
When we chose November for doing field work, it wasn't because of the weather (although we've lucked out on that front so far) but because we thought we would have the best chance of overlapping with Southern Residents. In our first five days in Puget Sound with our partners at the Center for Whale Research we've been thrilled to have five encounters with J-Pod and L-Pod!
While we ground truthed and refined our equipment set up in real world scenarios and got some great drone and behavioral observations over the first few days, the whales weren't being very vocal....until today! J-Pod was chatty all afternoon, giving us a chance to get some of our first high quality data with both loud discrete calls and drone footage.
Tahoma (Mt. Rainer) made for a stunning backdrop as surface active J-Pod whales made their way north back towards the Possession Triangle.
