K-Pod transited nearly 1000 miles in just 11 days: Monterey (CA) to Active Pass (BC)

You may have heard that K-Pod was seen in Monterey, California earlier this month. It was thus a surprise to us this morning to learn that they had gone north through Active Pass in the Canadian Gulf Islands!
It's not uncommon for killer whales to transit 100 miles or more in a day, but it's not often they do that for many consecutive days. To make it to the central Salish Sea this morning after last being seen in Monterey on March 10th, K-Pod transited nearly 1000 miles in just 11 days. That's an average of about 90 miles a day!
Often K-Pod and L-Pod spend a lot of time on the outer coast in the spring months, foraging not only in California but off the Oregon and Washington coasts as well. What compelled them to come back to inland waters in such a hurry? We can only speculate, but perhaps they were late for an important date with J-Pod, who has still been up in the Strait of Georgia of late!
