In June of 2015, Monika, Julie, and Michael had OBI's first-ever field research encounter when they got on the water with J- and L-Pods in Haro Strait. That evening was filled with so much excitement of what was to come, but at that moment we never could have believed what was in store for OBI over the course of the next 10 years. From hosting interns to teaching Whale University Classes and from having hundreds of research encounters per year in multiple countries to tracking thousands of whale sightings throughout the entirety of the Salish Sea, we have grown in so many unforeseen ways to become an organization dedicated not just to research of but also to education about and advocacy for wild killer whales.
We would like to invite our supporters to come join us to celebrate our 10th anniversary on San Juan Island. Over the weekend of June 6 - 9 (10 years to the date of our first research encounter!), you will gather with members of Team OBI and other like-minded orca enthusiasts for a whale-filled weekend. Go on one of Maya's Legacy's famous all-day trips with Monika, Sara, and Jason; attend a live taping of the After the Breach podcast with Jeff, Sara, and Monika; test your knowledge at a whale trivia night; get exclusive OBI swag; and join other OBI folks for meals, hikes, sunsets, and more. Cost includes three nights of group camping (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights).
Attendees will be charged 50% of the cost now and the remaining 50% in two months. All proceeds raised help fund our ongoing research.
